The 1976 World Road Race Championship was held in Ostuni, Italy. The racepresented 288 km over 8 laps of a long 36 km circuit.

Italian Francesco Moser shattered the peloton a few kilometers from the finish with a strong attack. Only Belgian Freddy Maertens could match the move and hold Moser’s wheel. Moser was unable to drop the Belgian sprinter as the duo went under the 1 km to go flag. With 'Tino' Conti (Ita) and Joop Zoetemelk (Ned) closing quickly Moser led out the long sprint. Freddy Maertens timed his sprint to perfection and beat the Italian to the finish line.

Freddy Maertens’ brilliant sprint earned him the 1976 World Championship.
